About a year ago I was going through the process of starting my own web design and online marketing business. One of the more fun aspects of this was generating brand concepts, including possible names and logos. If I haven’t mentioned it, I love designing logos.
This concept, for Metafox Media, was one of my favorites. I had many iterations of this one – including one using orange as the primary color for obvious reasons. Ultimately, I went in a different direction (see Launch Media Design) in part because of the fox logo used for the website, FiveThirtyEight.
While different, the similarities of the shape of the fox head were enough to make me uncomfortable. I would also have to steer away from using the color orange. I was okay with that as I was leaning more toward a silver fox anyway! Interestingly enough, they have since redesigned their logo and it now represents a pencil more than a fox. Being a data-driven news media company, I can see how the branding refresh makes sense for them.
In the end, the name Metafox Media was a bit too obscure when testing it with real people. I settled on Launch Media Design and have been happy with that decision. The Metafox Media concept was fun to create then and share with you now.
